Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

2024-2025 School Year

 

The Montgomery County School Board in Virginia is now accepting applications for a Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to work in conjunction with the special education department to serve the student population division wide for the 2024-2025 school year.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is responsible:

  • For participating on a team that determines students meet the disability criteria for the category of hearing impairment
  • To collaborate with specialists, school personnel, and families to determine and provide students with appropriate supports and services
  • To develop and implement an instructional program that will effectively provide the best possible education for each student

LICENSURE and EDUCATION:

  • Hold a current Special Education Virginia teaching license with the appropriate endorsement to teach hearing impaired students
  • Bachelor's degree or higher

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Have knowledge of anatomy involved in hearing impairment
  • Have knowledge of medical research relevant to hearing impairment
  • Have knowledge of academic, language and emotional implications of hearing impairment
  • Have knowledge of impact of communication mode on testing
  • Have understanding and acceptance of cultural diversity related to families and students who communicate with American Sign Language
  • Proficient competency in providing direct instruction to students
  • Knowledge and ability to use and interpret appropriate assessments and materials
  • Have knowledge of assistive listening technology
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and county special education regulations and program requirements
  • Experience addressing parental questions and concerns
  • Experience in providing academic, language and transition services in inclusive and pull out environments
  • Experience utilizing technology in an instructional environment
  • Functional knowledge of commonly used office equipment and work-flow technologies
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain an unquestionable degree of confidentiality
  • Ability to multi-task, work with interruptions, and work under pressure
  • Ability to be dependable and punctual

DESIRABLE:

  • Experience in a public school system

SCREENING DUTIES:

  • Ability to conduct hearing screenings

CONSULTATION DUTIES:

  • Contacts principals, teachers, and parents regarding results of screenings and referrals
  • Discusses the needs of identified students with classroom teachers
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers and support personnel regarding materials to assist qualifying students
  • Refers students and families to appropriate agencies and physicians
  • Corresponds with appropriate agencies and physicians concerning students
  • Participates in IEP, re-evaluation, and triennial meetings
  • Performs listening checks on hearing equipment
  • Collaborates with educational interpreters within the county

DOCUMENTATION DUTIES:

  • Maintains student records, test data, and reports
  • Inventories materials and equipment
  • Performs appropriate educational testing needed for IEP development and progress monitoring

SERVICE DUTIES:

  • Explains results of audiological evaluations and students' hearing loss as they relate to communication, educational development, and the classroom environment
  • Provides the necessary services to meet the needs of individual students who qualify according to State regulations and guidelines inclusively and in a pull out situation
  • Provides individualized programs for assigned students through the development, implementation, and evaluation of the IEP (e.g., tutoring, teaching, interpreting)
  • Assists students in educational and personal development
  • Provides Sign Language interpreting services for students when necessary
  • Selects assessment procedures that are valid and appropriate for students who are deaf or hard of hearing

MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES:

  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality of information concerning students
  • Participates in professional development activities and meetins
  • Orders materials and equipment
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
  • Travels between work sites and provides services at multiple locations
  • Proctors tests and exams, as needed
  • Communicates with parents and staff and establishes a positive atmosphere

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, twist, and reach for extended periods of time
  • Ability to communicate effectively - use of expressive and receptive skills
  • Lift or carry materials up to 20 pounds
  • Ability to maintain composure during stressful situations
  • Must possess physical and mental capability for the sole supervisory responsibility of public school students

TOOLS, TECHNOLOGY, AND EQUIPMENT:

  • Audiometers
  • FM systems, sound field systems
  • Speciality telecommunication, alerting and safety devices for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
  • Hearing Aids/Cochlear Implants
  • Maintain an email account and respond to messages in a timely manner
  • Smartboard
  • Computer - Google Suite 

 

FLSA Status:  Non-exempt

 

SALARY:  $50,072.26 - $83,120.04 annually; with benefits
